Medicare Advantage Plans

All-in-one coverage that bundles Medicare Parts A and B — often with prescription drugs, dental, vision, and hearing — through a private insurer.

What Is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans must cover everything Original Medicare covers, but many go further — adding prescription drug coverage (Part D), dental, vision, hearing, and wellness benefits.

Most Medicare Advantage plans have a $0 or low monthly premium, though you still pay your Part B premium. You will typically use a network of doctors and may need referrals for specialists depending on the plan type.

Types of Medicare Advantage Plans

  • HMO: Requires a network of providers and referrals for specialists. Generally lower out-of-pocket costs.
  • PPO: More flexibility to see out-of-network providers at a higher cost. No referrals required.
  • PFFS: You can see any Medicare-approved provider who accepts the plan payment terms.
  • SNP (Special Needs Plan): Tailored for people with specific chronic conditions, dual eligibility, or institutional care needs.

Is Medicare Advantage Right for You?

Medicare Advantage can be an excellent choice if you want predictable costs, extra benefits, and are comfortable staying within a provider network. However, if you travel frequently, have complex health needs, or want the freedom to see any specialist without referrals, a Medicare Supplement plan may serve you better.
